Anglia Examinations England has specialised in ESOL assessments for over 15 years and has been based in Chichester, England since 1994. Anglia offers a comprehensive and structured programme of assessing English language competence, from beginner through to native speaker level. Ascentis is an English National Awarding Body approved by both the English regulatory bodies (the QCA /Ofqual and QAA) to design, administer and award qualifications to national standards.
Ascentis was established in 1975 under the name OCNW as a partnership scheme between universities and colleges, and as such was owned by and accountable to its further and higher education member organisations, including the University of Liverpool, the University of Central Lancashire, Northumbria University, Edge Hill and University of Cumbria, which supplied both educational expertise and academic validation. From 1st August 2009 Ascentis is an independent limited company and registered educational charity in the United Kingdom and these members will continue to be members of the company.

Anglia Ascentis ESOL Examinations offers a comprehensive and structured programme of assessing English language competence, which students undertake at their own pace, guided by their teachers. Our programme is designed to take the student through all the stages necessary to achieve a level of proficiency and can be used to gain access to universities in different countries. This step by step approach to testing encourages and motivates students to make clear and effective progress.
There are no minimum age requirements for the exams. The Very Young Learner Levels are taken by children as young as four years old. The Higher Levels and the Business English Level exams are taken by students and adults who plan to continue their studies at an English medium University/ College or to improve their career prospects.
Anglia Ascentis ESOL Examinations is a member of EALTA (European Association for Language Testing and Assessment). The purpose of EALTA is to promote the understanding of theoretical principles of language testing and assessment, and the improvement and sharing of testing and assessment practices throughout Europe.
Anglia Examinations is owned by state run and administered Chichester College, England. The college opened in 1964 and is a major centre for a wide range of academic, commercial, scientific, technical, recreational and adult education courses in West Sussex, England.
Chichester College is a member of ENGLISH UK and an accredited BRITISH COUNCIL Centre.
Anglia Ascentis ESOL Examinations offers three levels of Children’s Oral tests, ten levels of General English exams and four levels of Business English assessment. These cover five bands: (Very) Young Learners, Lower Levels, General Intermediate Levels, Higher Levels and the Business Levels. The General Engish and Business English exams measure all four language skills – ie, reading, writing, listening and speaking.
The AcCEPT Proficiency level is listed by UCAS as a qualification which can be accepted by British universities to show international student competence in English language. The AcCept Proficiency examination has been designed to incorporate a stronger academic element within its first section. In addition, through our collaboration with the UK examination board Ascentis, the top four levels now have enhanced recognition: Intermediate (B1), Advanced (B2), AcCEPT Proficiency (C1) and Masters (C2) are fully accredited through the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) as Ascentis qualifications.
Everyone who takes and passes an Anglia exanination at one of the top four Ievels not only passes that level, but will also have achieved a QCA/ Ofqual approved Ascentis ESOL International qualification.
Certificate for International Teachers of English (C.I.T.E)
Anglia Ascentis ESOL Examinations also offers the C.I.T.E. exam (Certificate for International Teachers of English), which comes in two versions: C.I.T.E Young Learners and C.I.T.E General Training.
Anglia Certificate / Diploma in TESOL via Distance Learning (ADLP)
The Anglia Distance Learning Programme is a course designed for English Language Teachers who cannot afford the time or cost of attending a full-time teacher-training programme and would like to continue their professional development through a flexible, low-costing training programme. This course provides practical support for classroom teaching as well as an opportunity for teachers to maintain their level of English.
Anglia Ascentis ESOL Examinations has recently launched its International Qualification in Applied Translation offered in two separate and individually assessed exams – ie, the Certificate and the Diploma in Applied Translation.
Ascentis was incorporated as a company limited by guarantee on 23rd January 2009 and recognised as a charity on 16th April 2009. On 1st August 2009 it commenced business as an awarding organisation.
For the previous 34 years the organisation had been known as The Open College of the North West, or simply OCNW, and it was an unincorporated association of further, higher and adult education institutions. However, as it continued to grow it became clear that in order to achieve its aspiration of reaching out to centres and their learners across the UK and overseas it needed to convert to company status.
The result has been a dramatic growth in business with a record number of new centres, both across the UK and overseas, and a sharp increase in learners registering for Ascentis qualifications. This has enabled us to take on a number of additional staff to develop qualifications and provide support to our centres. It has also enabled us to relocate to modern offices at Lancaster Business Park.
It is pleasing that at a time when there is so much talk of doom and gloom generally, I can report that Ascentis is meeting the qualification requirements of an ever larger and more diverse customer base. With such a successful first year to build on, and with so many new qualifications to offer, (including, of course, Functional Skills) we can look forward to a very exciting year ahead.

Los dos/ tres niveles superiores de inglés general están catalogado por UCAS (Servicios de Admisiones Universitarias del Reino Unido) como certificaciones académicas del nivel de competencia lingüística para el ingreso universitario, y son válidos para acceder al programa de puntos con propósitos migratorios del Ministerio del Interior del Reino Unido. Vale destacar que universidades de distintos paises también aceptan los exámenes de Anglia Ascentis para homologar el nivel de inglés de sus alumnos.
